At Flint and Fire Studio we have a collective love of the wilderness. Winter can be a wonderful time to get out, explore nature and get some beautiful photos. Fortunately for us, we are in Denver Co, located just east of the awe inspiring Rockies. The mountains provide stunning scenery and opportunities to capture animals in their native habitat. Though breathtaking, epic peaks and sunlit valleys are not necessary to create great work. As a professor once explained years ago in a photography class at University; embrace the world around you, you do not have to go to Paris or have someone remove their clothes to create an artistic photo. Not to say these subjects are not great, as we love both Europe and nudes as subjects in art. The point being that there is also beauty in what surrounds us in our everyday lives.
Humans seem to have an instinctual love of nature. This love pulls us to create elaborate landscapes, care for exotic house plants and create wondrous outdoor living spaces. This attempt to bring the outside in, extends to bringing the “untamed wilderness” into our cities and suburbs. This can be seen in how cities are designed, including available green-space for residents to range over. There are community gardens popping up all over, in addition to lovely landscaped parks. Next time your in route to your local hangout, or even out for a jog; take visual note of these picturesque scenes, you may just find your next favorite place for a casual family exploration of the local wildlife.
We often take trips into the mountains on the weekends. However, we also on occasion opt for a stroll in one of our alluring state parks, most of which are engulfed by the city. With a few hours to spare last Saturday we roamed around Cherry Creek State Park, with the hopes of finding some wildlife to photograph. As luck would have it, we found some wildlife that was willing to participate in a impromptu photoshoot. On a cautionary note; be aware of your surroundings, as most wildlife is not accustomed to being approached by humans, and could react in an aggressive manor. Our photographer, Elliot is great at disturbing the animals as little as possible. We’re excited to share a few of our favorite photographs from our walk with you!
